Rules and Regulations:

The state of California is one of the 9 states that regulate the locksmith industry and requires all locksmiths who work with customers to be licenced. Licensing is done to protect both the customer as well as the locksmith. In order to obtain a licence all locksmiths must adhere to several requirements and undergo a criminal background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the California department of Justice (DOJ).

Locksmith licenses are issued by the BSIS (Bureau of Security and Investigative Services). There are 2 types of licenses: One for locksmith company owners (business licensing), and one for employees. California business owners must register with the Franchise Tax Board to obtain a resale tax ID, and in most cities or counties locksmith companies must also obtain a business license.
